More than 120 people were injured after a six-storey building came down following days of heavy rain and flooding.
Kenyan officials said at least 120 people were taken to hospital.
Rescuers said they could hear the voices of those trapped in the building.
A large crowd surrounded the residential address as police and rescue workers removed chunks of masonry.
TV footage showed the National Youth Service and
firefighters removing stones by hand and a crowd cheering as a child was
brought out of the rubble.
A tracing and counselling service was set up nearby, while President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the scene.
It is feared some builders in Nairobi are bypassing regulations amid high demand for housing.
Area legislator Stephen Kariuki said this was the second building to collapse in a year.
