THE Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade has tonight sent out an email to Australians travelling in
Bali warning of a terror threat to popular tourist beaches.
The
alert came in the past few hours and said the US Government has today
learnt of specific threats to beaches preparing for New Year’s Eve
celebrations.
Bali is three hours behind Sydney.
Travellers received the following email from DFAT:
“This
is an automated e-mail notification from the Australian Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Smartraveller advisory service. The
following Travel Advice has changed or been added since our last update
(Dec 22, 2015).”
The email told tourists to exercise a “high degree of caution” and included the following message:
“On
31 December, the US Government warned of a possible security threat at
popular tourist beaches on Lombok, such as Senggigi, surrounding the New
Year’s celebrations. You should exercise heightened vigilance at this
time (see Safety and security). The overall level of advice has not
changed.
“We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in Indonesia, including Bali.”
In 2002, a series of co-ordinated bomb explosions tore through Kuta, Bali killing and maiming hundreds.
Australia lost 88 holiday-goers in the tragedy.
