Flames were spotted early on Christmas Day at the home where Bill Clinton spent the first four years of his life.
The childhood home of former US president Bill Clinton has been damaged by fire in a suspected arson attack.
A motorist spotted flames at the Clinton Birthplace National
Historic Site in Hope, Arkansas, just after 3am on Christmas Day,
police said. When firefighters arrived the flames were up to eight feet high.
Hope Police Department Chief J.R. Wilson said the fire appears to have begun at the base of an outside wall.
The smell at the scene indicates an accelerant may have been used, he added.
Mr Wilson said firefighters extinguished the fire "very quickly" and the building is "still in good shape".
The home's walkway and a door were also vandalised with spray-painted graffiti, according to CNN.
The house belonged to Mr Clinton's grandparents and he lived there for the first four years of his life in the late 1940s, before moving to Hot Springs, Arkansas.
In a statement the home's superintendent Tarona Armstrong said the fire was confined to one part of the house, although the extent of the damage and the cause are still "unknown".
The house has been closed to visitors until further notice, she added.
